Field notes / 001 — an evolving atlas

Architectures of research

A landscape of people, ideas, and shared territories.
Nine researchers. A common publication window. Topics coded from anonymized titles.

RADIUS = ALIGNMENT · 0–100   /   HATCH = PERSON   /   ● = COMMERCIAL ACTIVITY · ○ = RESEARCH GRANT · * = HISTORICAL   /   SELECT A PERSON TO READ RELATED LOBES · DRAG ALONG SCORE RINGS
Research support / ○ awarded projects

Research grants.

Open circles mark selected awarded projects, linked to documented researchers. Their radius shows topic fit, not funding amount. National and foundation grants appear alongside clearly labeled institutional seed awards. Select a marker for funder, dates, researcher roles, amounts where reported, and sources.

Research into practice / ● commercial activity

Commercial pathways.

Black dots mark source-supported startups and commercial practices. Dotted leaders connect the documented researchers; a collaborator link does not imply a founding role. Dot radius uses its venture-topic fit score, so ventures may sit outside the person’s cloud. Select a dot to inspect roles, factors and sources. * Historical activity; current operation unverified.

How commercial dots are placed

Coverage is illustrative, not a business census. No independent venture was verified for Salmaan Craig in this search. Dorit Aviv is shown through a documented Clearly Cool project collaboration, not as a founder. These markers do not change the publication-based research scores or scale analysis.

Topics from the corpus.

The main comparison uses DOI-indexed journal and proceedings articles first published between 1 January 2020 and 17 October 2026. The same author-search budget, ORCID supplementation, institutional-source checks, date/type rules and duplicate screening apply to every researcher. Books, chapters, theses, patents, standalone essays, preprints, editorials, cover items and forthcoming records are excluded.

An independent review receives only hashed paper IDs and titles/subtitles: no author names, affiliations, previous scores, map positions or preferred placements. It develops one corpus-grounded topic codebook and applies it to every title. Primary and related topics are the three highest mean ratings, with no researcher-specific overrides. Jonathan’s red hatch is a display convention only.

Score = mean(central = 1, supporting = 0.5, absent = 0) ×100 across coded titles. Radius is linear: 0 at the center, 100 at the outer scoring ring. Primary focus is the highest score, with no placement exceptions. Unresolved titles stay outside the denominator. This is one independent semantic review, not an inter-rater-validated or full-text assessment. It reduces earlier placement bias while retaining sampling, title-language and reviewer limitations.

Field notes / 002 — scales of investigation

Scales of investigation.

A fresh, author-blinded scale review of the same publication corpus. Compare everyone on one logarithmic axis, or filter by the newly coded research topics. Whiskers show mapped scope, the dot its geometric mean, and the hatch ±1 sample standard deviation in log space.

Scale is coded independently from topic: thermal research does not automatically mean building scale, and material research does not automatically mean nanoscale. Titles are assigned conventional physical-scope bands only when an object of investigation is identifiable; insufficient evidence stays unresolved. These bands are interpretive bins, not measured dimensions. Each mapped paper contributes one equally weighted mean of its band midpoints in log₁₀(metres). The dot and ±1 sample SD summarize those paper values, not measurement uncertainty or a confidence interval. Gaps between mapped bands do not imply work at intermediate scales.

Edit the atlas

Add or revise researchers and their three bubbles. Area numbers refer to the topic order in the exported taxonomy. Each paper has independently coded topicWeights and a codingStatus; previous manual 0/1/2 ratings are not used. Changes save in this browser; export JSON to keep a copy. Independently coded topicWeights and codingStatus control the alignment scores.
